We often hear the term, schema these days, but what does this mysterious word actually mean? Schemas are the manifestations of the wounds we get while growing up, when a basic emotional need is violated, may it be the secure attachment or the sense of competence. These create a false idea, a false self-image in us about who we are and how we function in the world. However, our schemas are not the integral parts of our real being, just like the armors we put on ourselves or the faulty ways of coping with which we try to protect ourselves throughout our lives. With these we only actually protect our schemas and our false self-image. The essence of schema therapy is to decipher, to find out what schemas control and inhibit our everyday functioning, our connections, our personality development, and with what non-adaptive coping methods we defend ourselves. The aim of the therapy is to make these operational modes visible to the clients, so that they can place them outside of themselves, so to realize that these negative things are not about them, nor are they part of their self, but expressions of their deeper injuries. This is where we can start to find our innermost selves and our resources, and to develop healthy ways of coping.
